Origins of Tinsukia:-

When we begin with the origins, the ancient name of Tinsukia was Bangmara which was originally known as Changmai Pathar. It was the capital of Muttack Kingdom. The Bangmara city was built by King Sarbananda Singha with the help of his Minister Gopinath Barbaruah alias “Godha”. The city was built in the middle of the present Tinsukia City (near the Senairam H.S. School). As per the direction of Sarbananda Singha, Godha Baruah dug a triangular shaped pond in Bangmara which is known as "Tinikunia Pukhuri". In 1884 Dibru-Sadiya Rail line was constructed and a station was setup near the "Tinikunia Pukhuri" which was named as Tinsukia. Since then the City was popularly known as Tinsukia. The First King of Muttack Kingdom was Swargadeo Sarbananda Singha. Sarbananada Singha established his capital at Rangagarah situated in the bank of river Guijan. In 1791 A.D. he transferred his capital to Bangmara (present Tinsukia).

Doomdooma is the tea dominated town of Tinsukia district.Doom Dooma is a beautiful tea town in the Tinsukia district of Assam.Once the city was covered with jungle, mainly populated by elephants. The entire town is surrounded by tea gardens and is popularly known as the Tea City of Assam. It was under the Ahom Dynasty before the impact of the British on Assam. But Doomdooma was an underdeveloped city during the rule of the Ahom Dynasty, in fact it can be said that the place was almost nameless during the period of the Ahoms. During the British rule, they gave a proper name to the city. The name, Doom Dooma, sounds like the footfalls of elephants running “dumdum”. The name Doom Dooma came into existence. British had noticed Assam, especially Doom Dooma as an excellent place for the cultivation of tea. Now, Doom Dooma has the largest tea gardens in Asia. It also has many Namghars (Assamese Prayer Temple), Temples, Mosques, Gurudwaras, Churches, Bodh temple. 1. My Doom Dooma Connection: In 1972, just after my successful participation in the Bangladesh Ops, I arrived at Aviation Research Centre, Doom Dooma airfield learning the name of the place for the first time in my life. Apart from Tea Gardens, I was impressed by the abundant supply of oranges from the tea gardens. Apparently, they planted orange trees to provide shade to the tea plants. The plantation workers used to sell the fruits in small buckets and my Unit used to buy several of them. During the season, I remember mostly drinking the fresh squeezed orange juice at all times as we had no supply of bottled water those days. I have other good reasons to remember Tinsukia. When I got married in January 1973, I purchased a handloom Assam Silk saree for my future wife to keep the memory of this place for the rest of my life.
